How Crypto Became Trump’s Largest Source of Revenue
Since his return to office, Trump has introduced a number of crypto-friendly policies, including appointing industry-backed SEC Chair Paul Atkins and signing the GENIUS Act into law, both considered to be measures designed to strengthen the US’s position in digital asset markets.
What Trump’s Financial Disclosure Says About His Crypto Empire
Trump’s 2025 financial disclosure shows that his crypto-related businesses generated far more income than real estate, his traditional venture.
The Trump family’s decentralized finance platform, World Liberty Financial, brought in over $500 million in direct income.
The 2025 financial disclosure is 927 pages long, constituting one of the most extensive presidential financial disclosures.
The disclosure shows that much of Trump’s crypto earnings came from licensing agreements in addition to the crypto platform.
Donald Trump, who called Bitcoin a “scam” in 2021, spent an important portion of his presidential campaign promising to make America the “crypto capital of the planet.”
World Liberty Financial Emerges as Trump's Biggest Crypto Earner
As shown by the 2025 financial disclosure, the main source of Trump’s cryptocurrency income was World Liberty Financial, a crypto venture founded by his sons together with the sons of his special envoy, Steve Witkoff. According to Trump’s financial disclosure, the platform secured over $500 million in direct income. The figures indicate that Trump-branded Web3 products received interest from retail and institutional investors alike throughout 2025.
Trump’s major crypto earnings have sparked criticism, including from Richard Painter, who served as the chief White House ethics lawyer under George W. Bush, who describes the income as “extraordinary,” and argues that they represent a clear conflict of interest.
Trump Disclosure Shows Hundreds of Millions in Memecoin and NFT Income
Another aspect highlighted by the financial disclosure is the commercial success of Trump-branded digital assets. President Trump has made approximately $635 million to $636 million from a license agreement with Celebration Coins, the entity that launched the official $TRUMP meme token, with those royalty revenues flowing directly through CIC Digital LLC, the company that oversees his digital asset businesses.
Even though the token experienced a significant decrease in its value, the licensing structure of the project provided substantial royalty payments. This means that Trump’s reported income did not necessarily experience the drawbacks of price volatility $TRUMP suffered from at later stages.
The report also shows that First Lady Melania Trump earned $6 million from the creation and sales of NFT assets, highlighting the growing contribution of digital assets to the Trump family’s reported income.
The Trump Administration’s Pro-Crypto Policy Milestones
The large flow of crypto income coincides with President Trump’s clearly stated target of positioning the United States as a global leader in digital asset innovation. Since coming back to office, the Trump administration has introduced several major policy changes regarding the crypto industry.
Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (CLARITY Act) - May 2025
The CLARITY Act aims to eliminate regulatory ambiguity in the US by clearly dividing oversight powers between the SEC and the CFTC while protecting non-custodial developers. The legislation gained massive momentum in June 2026 when a coalition of over 200 major crypto companies signed a joint communiqué urging the U.S. Senate to finalize a formal vote on the bill before their upcoming summer recess.
SEC Regulatory Shift - April 2025
The appointment of Paul Atkins as the Chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) signalled an end to the previous “regulation by enforcement” approach. SEC is now transitioning towards operating with more clearly defined rules, and a compliance-focused framework.
GENIUS Act - June 2026
Signed by the President, the GENIUS Act established a federal framework supporting the responsible growth of digital assets with the goal of strengthening the United States’ position in global crypto markets. This framework includes a directive for the federal government to establish a strategic national cryptocurrency reserve, which means an integration of digital assets directly into the country’s financial strategy.
