SBI Just Told Ripple Its Not the Only Chain in Town

Japanese financial giant SBI Holdings has quietly moved to expand its in-house blockchain offerings. One of its formerly wholly-owned subsidiaries has been restructured to focus on building out the Canton Network, a new blockchain platform that will see the firm go beyond its existing partnerships with Ripple and the XRP Ledger.

New Identity, New Purpose

On July 28, SBI announced that SBI Security Solutions Co., Ltd. has changed its name to SBI Digital Practice Co., Ltd., from June 22, 2026. SBI has full ownership of the firm, which is situated in Roppongi, Tokyo.

The objective of this function is to develop a financial system and applications for businesses utilizing Canton. This entails everything from implementation assistance to compliance with regulations to cross-border systems handling transactions in different currencies. SBI also assumed the role of a Super Validator and became a part of the Canton community.

Why Canton, Why Now

SBI is positioning itself to benefit from the expected shift toward on-chain deposits, lending, and other financial services by a growing number of institutions, and it wants a slice of that action. Per SBI’s press release, this includes

  • +600 banks and other financial institutions already using Canton, including Goldman Sachs, BNP Paribas, Franklin Templeton, Broadridge and Euroclear
  • +$6 trillion in assets represented on the platform
  • The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation is also joining in on the fun by using Canton to tokenize “a portion of U.S. Treasuries,” giving SBI’s regional expansion a much-needed tailwind in the form of access to U.S. capital markets.

That Treasury tokenization scheme has already seen one transaction settle, with an on-chain Treasury security traded via Tradeweb on Canton and settled in USDCx stablecoins.

No, SBI Isn't Discarding Ripple

Months before the unveiling of the new brand announcement, it’s easy to conclude that this occurred because of the break-up but that isn’t what’s actually taking place. Since 2016, when SBI Ripple Asia was established to expand RippleNet-based payment solutions in the Asia-Pacific region, SBI and Ripple have been closely working together in making the XRP Ledger successful.

The partnership isn’t ending with this announcement. SBI Ripple Asia made its commitment to XRPL clear recently by announcing in April 2026 that it had launched a new token issuance system that developers would use to create compliant tokens on this ledger. The difference is that when Ripple’s platform facilitated every type of transactions possible, including digital payments and token issuance, this new platform focuses on institutional infrastructure and all activities that require confidentiality.

The recent design of Canton is not just an isolated creation, but a part of an elaborate vision. Below find how SBI is planning to reach its goals.

Network / Partner Focus Recent Move
XRP Ledger / RippleNet Payments, token issuance Token issuance platform launched (April 2026)
Canton Network Institutional infrastructure, securities New SBI Digital Practice unit; Super Validator status
Solana (via DigiFT) Tokenized equities Launched JX token — a Japanese equity strategy on-chain
Ondo Finance Tokenized Japanese stocks Settlement via SBI's JPYSC yen stablecoin
Coinhako (Singapore) Regional distribution SBI took a majority stake, approved by MAS

What We Have Learned

SBI is promoting the idea of using multiple blockchain systems instead of adhering to only one. Ripple remains one of its main partners; however, setting up the new ideas in Canton, Solana, and many other projects means that SBI is ready to establish itself in ’on-chain’ finance and learn to adapt and be flexible in a varying world of blockchains used in financial institutions.

SBI did not provide any information concerning clients or a time of the launching of SBI Digital Practice. However, it has already made it clear that the company believes that ‘on-chain finance’ means the ability of selecting the right chain depending on the situation and not just fidelity to the first invention it created.
