Polymarket Kills the Bitcoin Deposit Wait

Polymarket has changed the way bitcoins are deposited and has managed to reduce the time it takes for funds to show up from as long as one hour to under one second. The newly created system uses Spark technology in combination with the Lightning Network for instant deposits and confirmations.

From an Hour-Long Wait to Instant Credit

Polymarket switched to Lightning-based Bitcoin deposits on July 8, replacing the on-chain method it had used since October 2025.

Old system:

  • 3 to 6 network confirmations are required to update the account balance.
  • Between 10 minutes and a full hour, depending on how busy the network is
  • Raised minimum deposit amounts to cover bridging costs

New system:

  • Clears deposits in less than a second
  • Fees are near zero
  • A trading balance is not secured with a confirmation threshold from a wallet
Old Onchain Method New Spark/Lightning Method
Confirmation time 10 min – 1 hour Under 1 second
Confirmations needed 3–6 blocks None
Fees Higher (bridging costs) Near zero
Minimum deposit Higher Lower
Custody User-held User-held

Insight View

Instead of waiting for the Bitcoin blockchain to confirm a transaction block-by-block, Spark checks it the moment it’s broadcast, identifying double-spend risk and fee issues right away instead of making users wait it out.

What's Actually Running Under the Hood

The main point of the upgrade is the Spark technology that successfully integrates Lightning Network transactions with BTC holding without recourse to traditional transfer methods. Now users do not have to wait for Bitcoin transactions to be confirmed, thanks to Spark that validates all transactions right after being routed.

Polymarket has addressed one major issue when using Spark technology to process payments:

  • No need to clear any confirmation levels
  • No need to use any of their own Lightning nodes
  • All transactions are processed with one simple SDK

Full custody of Bitcoins remains with the user at all times. Breez, Xverse, and Cake are already building solutions on top of this technology for future instant Bitcoin deposits.

Kalshi volume surpasses polymarket, compares slow vs instant funding speed

The truth behind the hurry: Kalshi

Timing is not a coincidence. Polymarket is attempting to compete with Kalshi as it recently recorded $5.42 billion in trading volumes, overtaking Polymarket for the first time with a volume of $1.99 billion.

  • Kalshi = $5.42 billion in trading volume
  • Polymarket = $1.99 billion in trading volume
  • The total of 2 platforms combined amounts to $7.41 billion in a month.

Polymarket is facing several challenges:

  1. Introduced U.S. perpetual futures trading thus making it possible to go beyond the original contract format.
  2. Implemented the instant funding feature for Bitcoin which is aimed at collecting the funds the users may have kept in their wallets and then transferred into stable coins.

Paolo Ardoino, the CEO of Tether commented on the new feature by underlining that it has transformed Bitcoin making it programmable and enabling it to work with Lightning technology.

Why Deposit Speed Could Decide Next Round

With Kalshi posting record monthly volumes and both exchanges competing for the same pool of traders, the battle increasingly comes down to friction, how fast money comes in, how much it costs to move it around and how many assets a platform will allow.

Polymarket’s bet: If deposit time is less than a second, that eliminates one of the last excuses a bitcoin holder might have to use a rival platform, or to skip prediction markets altogether. The next few months of volume data will likely show whether that will be enough to close the gap with Kalshi, as both platforms continue to race to make funding as close to instant as trading itself.
