Crypto consensus refers to the use of consensus algorithms in decentralized systems to agree on the content of new blocks without involving a central authority. In decentralized finance, consensus mechanisms help to secure transaction data on the blockchain.
While there are different types of consensus methods, below are the most common blockchain consensus mechanisms. Users expend energy or post collateral for validation.
- Proof of Work (PoW): Miners use substantial amounts of computing power and specialized hardware to solve puzzles. See more about Proof of Work.
- Proof of Stake (PoS): Validators stake a certain amount of their own crypto as collateral, competing for a chance to validate blocks. See more about Proof of Stake.
For maximum security, a reliable consensus mechanism combines a Sybil resistance method with a chain selection rule. Since Bitcoin utilizes the longest chain rule, nodes rely on the longest version of the blockchain to achieve consensus. PoS and PoW consensus mechanisms typically offer protection by preventing Sybil attacks, ensuring that a single entity does not control the network’s computing power.
