What Is Bitcoin Cash?

Bitcoin Cash is a digital currency that was created in August 2017. At the start of the month, one group wanted to change the Bitcoin protocol in order to make it more suitable for processing a high number of transactions. They believed that increasing the block size limit would result in greater transaction throughput, allowing many transactions to be processed without overwhelming the Bitcoin blockchain. The hard fork produced Bitcoin Cash (BCH), a new blockchain with the same core structure as Bitcoin. Since its creation, BCH has been working to realize the vision of a peer-to-peer electronic cash system that was outlined in 2008.

How Bitcoin Cash Processes Transactions: History and Mechanism

Bitcoin Cash differs from Bitcoin in terms of its block size. The main purpose of creating BCH was to increase the size of the block, which for a long time was limited to 1 Megabyte (1 MB) for Bitcoin. The increasing popularity of Bitcoin led to significant traffic jams in the blockchain. Thus, BCH launched the Bitcoin Cash block size and later expanded it to 32 MB. A larger block size allows processing more transactions in a single block resulting in faster and cheaper transactions for all users of the blockchain network.

Bitcoin Cash utilizes similar mechanisms and structures to Bitcoin because it inherited Bitcoin blockchain history until the disagreement in 2017. These are:

  • Proof-of-Work consensus mechanism, which uses specialized computer hardware to solve complex equations and add new transaction blocks to the blockchain to maintain security and decentralization of the network.
  • Private keys, which give the holders of Bitcoin Cash coins ultimate control over their funds.
  • A capped supply of 21 million BCH to offset devaluation.

Bitcoin Cash vs. Bitcoin

Although these cryptocurrencies share the same blockchain history, they differ in terms of various aspects such as transaction fees, the main use case, market traction and more.

Bitcoin Cash
  • Used as fast, cheap electronic cash for daily spending.
  • Fees are consistently under 1 cent.
  • BCH has up to 32 MB blocks to process more transactions.
  • Has a lower transaction volume compared to Bitcoin because of its small user base and active community.
Bitcoin
  • Mainly used as an institutional asset.
  • Variable transaction fees that can be high during busy hours.
  • Block size can be increased to nearly 4 MB via SegWit.
  • Has unmatched market traction thanks to its number of users and highest level of security.

On Which Platforms You Can Use Bitcoin Cash

Several established platforms have been supporting BCH since the hard fork in 2017. Some of them are:

  • Coinbase: Listed Bitcoin Cash in December 2017. Since then, users can buy and sell BCH, or swap Bitcoin Cash with other cryptocurrency exchanges.
  • PayPal and Revolut: Both platforms added Bitcoin Cash as a supported currency. Users with PayPal and Revolut can buy or hold BCH for their daily spending.
  • BitPay: The oldest cryptocurrency payment processor. It accepts Bitcoin Cash transactions from merchants globally, putting BCH into active commercial use.

Market Performance of Bitcoin Cash: What Drives the BCH Price

Bitcoin cash price history demonstrates the cryptocurrency’s volatility, similar to the whole crypto market’s performance. Thus, the BCH peaked at around $3,785 in December 2017 shortly after issuing. Then it rapidly dropped to almost reach $75 at the end of 2018. Afterward, several price cycles occurred, and the value of BCH rose to approximately $993 in the middle of 2021, reaching the lowest point since then in 2022, hitting $97 at the end of the year. And now, the cost of BCH is going back to the mid-hundreds as of 2024-2025.

Bitcoin Cash was created to offer low fees and scalability, which makes it different from Bitcoin (BTC) in the long run. Unlike BTC, BCH has a capped total supply, meaning that newly issued coins depend solely on miners’ activity.

Bitcoin Cash Evaluation as Part of the Crypto Portfolio

When considering buying, selling, or trading BCH, these points are worth considering:

  • Liquidity: Bitcoin Cash is tradable on any major cryptocurrency exchange, including Binance, Kraken, Coinbase, OKX, and others. The high trading volume indicates good liquidity, making it easier to sell large amounts of BCH without significantly affecting the price.
  • Fees and accessibility: Bitcoin Cash transactions typically involve micro fees, commonly less than one cent. This is an essential consideration when compared to other assets with high fees.
  • Regulatory environment: The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and the former Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) chairwoman have classified Bitcoin Cash as a commodity. This regulatory clarity may offer advantages over other crypto assets.
  • Market dynamics: Some traders analyze the current value of Bitcoin Cash in conjunction with standard market indicators, such as the price of BCH itself, to evaluate near-term price movements and cash price performance against the broader cryptocurrency market.

A Balanced View of Bitcoin Cash’s Role in Crypto

Bitcoin Cash was created to realize Bitcoin’s potential as a medium of exchange. The Bitcoin Cash protocol is being upgraded and improved by its community of developers. In 2023, CashTokens were introduced to the network, providing it with native token support, and in 2024, the ABLA (Adaptive Block Length Algorithm) was adopted, which allows for a more flexible block size. Whether Bitcoin Cash fulfills its role as the electronic cash system envisioned by the original Bitcoin white paper is still an open question.

The Bitcoin Cash price, as well as the state of the BCH ecosystem, is influenced by the same factors that drive the price of Bitcoin, including market sentiment, investors’ demand for digital currency, the regulatory environment, and the value of Bitcoin.

The analysis of Bitcoin Cash’s price history, transactional mechanism, and structural differences with the new bitcoin proposals provides an understanding of the BCH situation.
